We are quickly approaching the end of the third quarter of school and parents will soon be headed into Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Parents, remember, you are your child’s first advocate.  Some children with learning differences go undetected for years because they “aren’t failing bad enough.”

It is a common occurrence in today's school setting where students languish in the RTI system making just enough change to show improvement, but not enough progress to keep up with their peers. Each year the child falls more and more behind.  These situations often leave parents, and teachers, feeling helpless.

Parents hear this loud and clear – YOU HAVE POWER and you need to use it!
  • Communicate with your child’s teacher – ask to see the curriculum that is being used to remediate your child’s problem areas (reading or math). Ask for the research that supports the curriculum’s effectiveness.
  • Ask to see your child’s dyslexia screening results and what the school’s plan to help your student.
  • Ask for additional support to be provided to your child in the way of school supported tutoring or after school programing.
  • Do not accept retention as a tool for remediation.
  • Request that the school provide a comprehensive evaluation to determine if a learning difference is at the cause of your child’s struggles, and if so, determine the types of additional support necessary for your child to make gains.
  • Expect results! And if you are not getting results, reach out to your school board representative.

I strongly encourage you to find other parents who share your concerns. Band together and you can make a difference.  Remember you are not alone.
If you have questions, reach out for a consultation.
At CenterPoint Learning Solutions we provide support for reading, attention, executive functioning and math, as well as parent advocacy.
